BACKGROUND INFORMATION First Safety City built in Danville, Illinois, in 1972 and named Danville's Friendly Village In Alberta, Safety Cities now operate in Red Deer, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Calgary, and Edmonton, with a new location being added in Grande Prairie Red Deer Safety City Society is a non-profit organization which partners with the Kiwanis Club of Red Deer to maintain the Red Deer Kiwanis Safety City The facility opened in April of 2001. Since this time, nearly 17,000 children from across Central Alberta have attended our programs. A volunteer Board of Directors comprised of members from the Kiwanis Club of Red Deer, teachers, safety-orientated individuals, and members at large governs the Red Deer Safety City Society. PURPOSE OF SAFETY CITY Safety City provides educational, interactive injury prevention programs for children in a realistic and non-threatening environment. The ultimate aim is to reduce or prevent injuries. Programs are offered to schools, families, agencies, and clubs from across Central Alberta.
