BACKGROUND INFORMATION
- First Safety City built in Danville, Illinois, in 1972 and named Danville's Friendly Village
- In Alberta, Safety Cities now operate in Red Deer, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Calgary, and Edmonton, with a new location being added in Grande Prairie
- Red Deer Safety City Society is a non-profit organization which partners with the Kiwanis Club of Red Deer to maintain the Red Deer Kiwanis Safety City
- The facility opened in April of 2001. Since this time, nearly 17,000 children from across Central Alberta have attended our programs.
- A volunteer Board of Directors comprised of members from the Kiwanis Club of Red Deer, teachers, safety-orientated individuals, and members at large governs the Red Deer Safety City Society.
PURPOSE OF SAFETY CITY
Safety City provides educational, interactive injury prevention programs for children in a realistic and non-threatening environment. The ultimate aim is to reduce or prevent injuries. Programs are offered to schools, families, agencies, and clubs from across Central Alberta.
